100-pound gargoyle stolen from Nicol St. home

NANAIMO — A stone gargoyle at a Nicol St. home didn’t live up the legend they help ward off bad spirits.

The 100-pound gargoyle with a 2.5 foot wingspan was stolen sometime overnight on Wednesday, May 27 from a home on Nicol St.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW the gargoyle had watched over the property for years.

“We all let our guard down from time to time and this is exactly what happens.”

He said the thief took considerable effort to steal the heavy accessory, kicking through the fence to access the yard, swiping it off the deck and carrying it away to a waiting car or cart.

“We’re thinking they maybe got in a little over their head,” O’Brien said of the thief.

Given how eye-catching the gargoyle is, O’Brien said officers are confident someone will come forward and help them recover it.
