We are saddened to announce the passing of Jim Thompson.
Jim was born in Peterborough Ontario, one of 6 children of Roy and Ada Thompson. Jim attended high school in Peterborough and in Whitehorse and graduated from Magee High School in Vancouver. Jim studied Geology at UBC and after graduation practiced geology for 40 years, mainly in the oil patch, 25 years with Gulf Oil and then many years as a consultant. Jim’s work took him to Angola, Copenhagen and finally Calgary where he finished his career. Jim also did some consulting work that took him to China. While in Copenhagen Jim, his wife Elsie and daughter Susan were fortunate to travel extensively throughout Europe, these are the years that Jim remembered most fondly.
Jim was a long time member of the Canyon Meadows Golf Club in Calgary and of the geological professional associations, AAPG, CSPG and APEGA. Jim particularly enjoyed participating in the annual CSPG Classic Golf Tournament.
Jim and Elsie retired to Qualicum Beach in 1993 to enjoy golfing and the weather. Elsie passed away in 1998, leaving Jim too early.
Jim was active in the Parksville Probus club, serving as president in 1998 and also enjoyed golfing with the Mid Island Seniors.
In addition to his wife Elsie (nee Toth) Jim was predeceased by his brothers William (Bill), Robert (Bob) and John (Lang) and his sister Hilda. He is survived by his daughter Susan of Qualicum Beach and his sister Patricia (Pat) of Peterborough. In addition “Uncle Jim” is survived by numerous nieces and nephews all of which he took great interest in and loved very much.
Jim had a lust for life, loved to tell a story and was a good friend to many, he will be dearly missed.
