NANAIMO — Wet roads, low lying fog and subsequent poor visibility are likely factors in a crash along Cedar Road on Sunday Nov. 3.

Nanaimo RCMP report a 26 year old male driver lost control his older model Toyota Corolla while travelling eastbound along Cedar Road.

The vehicle went off the road, flipped and collided with a BC Hydro poll.

Nanaimo RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien told NanaimoNewsNOW they’re investigating.

“The visibility was somewhat affected and the roads were wet at the time and a number of witness came forward.”

Emergency crews responded to the scene, with the driver removed from the vehicle and airlifted to hospital in Victoria with life threatening injuries.

Police closed Cedar Road in both directions to conduct an investigation, while BC Hydro crews secured the power pole. The pole was damaged in the incident, however no outages were reported by BC Hydro.

The incident comes at a time of the year where police see an increase of vehicle incidents related to the conditions.

This time of the year, it’s extremely wet and visibility is limited,” said O’Brien. “Daylight hours are limited and the number one cause of many accidents is speed. Simply reducing your speed increases your chances of getting home safely.”

O’Brien added crosswalks are one area where they see the biggest increase in reports.
