PARKSVILLE — Oceanside Mounties are alarmed by more than 100 school speed zone violators in less than two weeks.

Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman said many of the offenders zipped through school zones going double the limit, resulting in their members continually writing tickets.

Foreman said one of their officers was astounded by a continuous flow violators.

“He couldn’t keep up with the amount of people speeding through the zone, so he had to pick the ones going 20 km/h over the speed limit,” Foreman said. “When school’s in session that’s just unacceptable.”

Foreman said most of the violations transpired during a three day span beginning Monday, Sept. 9, following numerous warnings during the first week of school.

He said violations happened at school’s all over District 69, noting there was a presence at every school thanks to help from their speed watch volunteers.

“We’re getting less and less daylight before and after school, so it’s increasingly dangerous for kids to get to school. We have to get the message out to slow down in school zones.”

Luckily no students were injured, according to Foreman.

ICBC data indicates 86 students are injured in playgrounds and school zones every year.

Fines for speeding in a school zone start at $196.

School zone speed limits are in effect province-wide from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.
