Would-be thieves attempt late-night Nanaimo bank robbery

Jul 11, 2019 | 7:31 AM

NANAIMO — An attempted bank robbery like something out of a movie was thwarted by the rising sun and loud noise.

Two people, one of which is believed to be a woman, were seen by security cameras outside the north Nanaimo Scotiabank between roughly 3:45 a.m. and 5 a.m. on Tuesday, July 2.

RCMP Cst. Gary O’Brien said the two tried to break into the night deposit box at the bank, possibly with an electric drill or saw.

They managed to create a 12 inch by eight inch hole but weren’t successful in stealing any money.

Though the faces seen on the video are masked, O’Brien said police are confident someone knows something.

“Criminals talk. They like to share, they like to brag. That’s the information we need to hear from somebody.”

The criminals were at the bank for more than one hour while making a significant amount of noise.

O’Brien said it’s possible someone saw something but didn’t report it to police.

If anyone has any information, they’re urged to call Nanaimo RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
