Qualicum group raises enough to support refugee family

The Qualicum Refugee Sponsorship group has enough money to support a family of eight from Myanmar for up to two years.

Chair Carol Doering says they have fundraised an impressive $53,000 since early Feburary, with the money going directly to the family.

“Over the last few months we’ve held a number of fundraisers and they’ve all been very successful,” said Doering

She says the money raised locally is in addition to the federal government’s contribution.

“The family, from what we understand, has very little education, so they’re going to have a big adjustment to move here, both culturally and just trying to get and education and a job, so they’re going to need a lot of support.”

Doering says a translator from Langley will spend about two weeks with the family, as they speak an obscure language.

The family of five children and three adults is expected to settle into a home on Sunningdale Road in Qualicum Beach by mid-July.
