Smoky skies finally clear over Nanaimo area

NANAIMO — After nearly two weeks, the air quality in Nanaimo and across Vancouver Island is finally improving. 

The smoky skies bulletin put into effect by Environment Canada was lifted Saturday afternoon due to shifting winds. 

Meteorologist Cindy Yu told NanaimoNewsNOW it’s thanks to a low pressure system moving across B.C. and high winds blowing back to the Interior. 

It wasn’t a sudden change. Yu said the winds began over the Strait of Georgia on Friday, Aug. 11 and increased throughout the weekend. 

“The cold front came through Saturday night with some showers embedded,” she said. “With that, we should see the air to clear out further.”

The recent heat which has gripped the Island in recent weeks will also lessen. 

“Even the inland temperatures should be dropping down to low 20’s again,” she said. “Monday will be our coolest day, where our forecasting high is currently at 20 C for Monday afternoon.” 

Yu said any remaining smoke should be completely gone by Monday.
