Man accused of robbing three Nanaimo stores released from custody

NANAIMO — A man accused of robbing three Nanaimo convenience stores has been released from custody for a third time already this year.

Darren Lloyd Petrie, 55, was charged with three counts of robbery during an appearance in Provincial Court in Nanaimo on June 21. He was arrested a day earlier in connection with three robberies at downtown Nanaimo convenience stores over a four-hour period earlier this week.

Petrie, of no fixed address, was also charged with theft under $5,000 for allegedly stealing tools from a Waddington Ave. home on June 18.

A judge decided not to hold Petrie in custody on Thursday, granting him bail under a host of conditions, including a curfew and that he not possess or consume drugs.

Court records showed Petrie was arrested and charged with forcible entry and theft for an alleged offence in Nanaimo in January of this year. He was released from custody pending a court appearance in April, however he failed to appear and a warrant was issued.

Petrie was arrested again in late May but again was released from custody ahead of a June 26 trial date.

His record includes multiple convictions for theft and impaired driving. He’s scheduled to appear in court next Tuesday.
