Steelworkers Hall a community hub

Alberni Union Hall for sale

A ‘For Sale’ sign outside the Port Alberni Steelworkers Hall is an unfortunate sign of the times according to local Union President Brian Butler.
He said the loss of sawmills and decline of logging activity in the area reduced their local membership from thousands down to a couple hundred workers.
“APD left, Somass before that, and just a reduction in harvesting numbers as well,” he said. “We lost 20% of the land base, taken back by government and turned into BC Timbersales, so a real marked drop in membership.”
The former IWA / Steelworkers Hall on Montrose Street is listed for $799,000 as the once mighty forest industry is now a shadow of its former self, said Butler.
“It’s sad to see where it’s gone,” he said. “It’s not one group to blame for it,. You can always blame governments, whether it was the Liberal government before the NDP government, it just seems to be at a pace now, but it’s really, really concerning for the industry and workers.”
While the Alberni Valley was once home to thousands of sawmill workers and loggers, only 240 Steelworker members remain here, so Butler said the decision was made to sell the 60-year old building after local rep Glen Cheetham announced his retirement in January.
The IWA / Steelworkers Hall has been a community gathering spot for more than 60 years.
Local Steelworkers will now be served out of their Courtenay or Duncan offices.
