Clippers clinch second playoff seed with win over Powell River

Mar 21, 2026 | 5:28 AM

NANAIMO — The Clippers will finish as the number two team in the Coastal West division standings.

They secured their spot with a 4-2 win over the Powell River Kings.

The game was tight throughout until the teams had a frenzied finish.

Despite being outshot 22-8 in the opening period the Kings held a 1-0 lead on a late goal by Max Bleicher.

Indiana Grossbard tied the game at 1-1 on an outnumbered chance that tipped in off a defender in the middle frame.

Drew Roelofs put Nanaimo up 2-1 cashing in on a rebound off the end boards early in the third.

When Miller Kay had an empty net tally with 1:39 left in the game it appeared the Clippers had everything wrapped up.

Far from it.

Eliot Compton scored on a man advantage with 24 seconds left and the Kings would break in again with under 10 seconds remaining only to be stymied by an incredible leaping save by netminder Eliot Sequin-Lescarbeau.

That stop led to an empty netter from Hayden Fechner with just under a second on the clock to cement a 4-2 victory.

Nanaimo went 0/4 on the man advantage and 3/4 killing penalties.

The Clippers had a season high in shots on goal, outshooting Powell River 57-29.

Kings goalie Erik Powers was spectacular in the loss making 53 saves on the night.

The victory was Nanaimo’s third in a row and they ended their season series with Powell River with a 6-1 record.

The Clippers will host the higher second between Alberni Valley and Victoria in the opening round of the BCHL playoffs likely to begin on Friday, April 3 at Frank Crane Arena.

Nanaimo has four games remaining on the regular season schedule including a Sunday matinee on March 22 against the West Kelowna Warriors.
