NANAIMO — A judge shot down a man’s interim release application, who’s accused of several prowling-type incidents, including indecent acts in Nanaimo.

David Robert Hope, 52, faces eight criminal charges in relation to several alleged offences late last summer and early fall in Nanaimo, including four indecent act charges, and a pair for voyeurism.

Hope allegedly elevated his offending with a pair of break-and-enters.

One of the allegations against the Duncan man involved a reported incident in Lake Cowichan.

Hope’s offending allegedly features peering into central and south Nanaimo-area homes late at night while masturbating.

Hope’s judicial interim release application was rejected by provincial court judge Christina Proteau following arguments on Monday, March 9.

While a detailed summary of Hope’s alleged conduct was outlined by Crown Counsel Jordan Hauschildt in opposition to a pretrial release bid, the hearing is covered by a court-ordered publication ban.

The ban is in place to protect the integrity of future judicial proceedings, with only the judge’s decision on the matter permitted to be publicly revealed.

None of the allegations detailed above against David Hope has been proven in court.

He attended the bail hearing in person at Nanaimo Law Courts, while his lawyer made submissions on his behalf.

Hope has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1991, which includes offences in Saskatchewan.

Most notably, he received an eight-year prison sentence in 2016 for the violent sexual assault of two University of Victoria women after he forced his way into their apartment.
