Nanaimo gymnastics school athletes return from BC Winter Games

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Gymnastics school sent five athletes to the BC Winter Games in Trail and Rossland.

Sophie Fayerman and Annika Dunderdale competed in Level 7 and Hazel Techen and Gianna Phillips were in Level 8.

Norah Box earned a wild card entry into the event which was held from Feb. 25 to March 1.

Techen had an amazing performance winning gold all around in her division.

Coach Tracy Welbourn said the Level 8 field had a large depth of talent.

“Despite the long travel to get to the games and less then idea accommodations Hazel met the challenge with great poise and confidence. She really embraced the culture of the BC Games and had a great time competing and being part of the team.”

The central island atheltes were part of Zone 6 at the games which encompasses Vancouver Island.

Zone 6 won a bronze medal in the female team competition for Level 7 and 8 artisitic gymnastics.

Other individual medals went to Box with a silver medal from the apparatus finals on beam.

Dunderdale earned bronze on vault in the apparatus finals in her division.

Welbourn and fellow Nanaimo coach Trevor Nagy attended the event as the lead coaches for the artistic gymnastics team and Welbourn said she was pleased with how the athletes handled themselves at the games.

“All athletes competed with amazing sportsmanship, confidence and positive attitudes. These athletes have wonderful maturity kindness and caring for each other which made attending the games with them all worth the while.”
