Cherry Creek and Harbour Quay markets

Farmer’s Markets remain split

Mar 5, 2026 | 9:23 AM

With Spring approaching, the renewal of a consolidated Port Alberni Farmers Market remains dormant.

Bringing the two farm markets back together was recently cited as something that would strengthen the community, but organizers says the two sides aren’t talking.

Cherry Creek farm market president Norm Lowe said they originally split in 2012 as vendors sought a more sheltered space to sell their wares, out of the cold and rain of the Harbour Quay.

“Cherry Creek is an ideal place. It might not be ideal down at Harbour Quay with the weather,” he said. “The ones are up at Cherry Creek are quite happy. You won’t get them to move. I’ve been there right from the start – 12 years at Cherry Creek and I’m certainly not interested in starting to go down to Harbour Quay again.”

Harbour Quay Spirit Square Farmers Market President Sarah Rymer says while they haven’t reached out to the Cherry Creek market members, they would certainly welcome their return.

“I think there’s so much good that’s happened in recent years at the Harbour Quay,” she said. “There’s lots of farmers, great partnerships and a really positive vibe down there and it would be great to have a year-round, more-sheltered location.”

Rymer said the Harbour Quay Market is part of the BC Association of Farmer’s Markets and faces some restrictions on the amount of non-food items sold. Cherry Creek does not share similar controls.
