NANAIMO — A local woman’s extended fraud scheme against her former employer resulted in a guilty plea and potential jail time.

Jayvee Abad Salayon, 32, pleaded guilty to fraud over $5,000 on Tuesday, March 3 at Nanaimo Law Courts for illegally obtaining funds from a local physiotherapy clinic.

Crown Counsel’s Jordan Hauschildt told court CBI Health on Third St. was victimized out of $133,100 over the course of seven months in 2022.

“Essentially, she conducted a number of refunds over the course of that date range from CBI’s point of sale machine. The refunds were deposited into her account.”

Notably, the breach of trust involved Salayon making 137 separate transactions.

Hauschildt said the fraudulent scheme resulted in Salayon resigning from the company.

A CBI Health official confirmed Salayon served as an administrative assistant with the company.

Judge Chris Churchill ordered a pre-sentence report, while Salayon is slated to be sentenced at a later date.

She was also charged with theft over $5,000; however the offence will likely be dropped.

Salayon was charged by the BC Prosecution Service last September following a Nanaimo RCMP investigation.

Sentences for fraud over $5,000 vary wildly in Canada between non-custodial sentences and several years in prison, while restitution payments are commonly ordered.

The offender’s sentencing hearing date is expected to be established next month.
