Clippers squander strong start in Powell River

Mar 1, 2026 | 12:15 AM

POWELL RIVER — For the first time since mid December the Clippers have lost back to back games in regulation time

Nanaimo went down 7-4 in Powell River a night after suffering a 3-1 loss at home to the Victoria Grizzlies.

The game started when Harrison Boldt scored just six seconds in and Patrick Fortune doubled the lead at the 30 second mark.

Things turned quickly after that with Michael Azzarone scoring immediately off a faceoff for the Kings two minutes later and then Ben Wright on a power play and an in close deke from Eliot Compton gave Powell River the advantage.

Tanner Bruender tied the game for Nanaimo but Compton would tally again before the intermission break to give the Kings a 4-3 lead.

The Clippers chased starter Erik Powers after just 30 seconds but Devin Peck was very strong the rest of the game.

Peck and Clipper goalie Matthew Hutchison kept the score at 4-3 all the way until the third period.

The Kings scored three straight goals in the third period by Azzarone, Tadeas Mack and Kamyl Chemrouk to take control of the game.

Indiana Grossbard’s player play marker for the Clippers capped off the scoring.

Nanaimo was outshot 33-25 while going 2/3 on the man advantage and 1/2 killing penalties.

The Clippers were short manned on the ice and on the bench for the game as Caden Okovita and Sam Boisvert were serving suspensions and Charles Beland was out due to illness.

Henry Acres was the lone coach on the bench with head coach Colin Birkas out sick and Evan Richardson unable to attend due to other work commitments.

Two affiliate players from the Nanaimo Buccaneers, Madden Cruickshank and Nate Barclay, both saw action in the game.

The Clippers are expecting to have a near full roster when they face the Victoria Grizzlies in a home and home series starting March 6 at Frank Crane Arena.
