Hutchison succeeding in the crease for hometown Clippers

NANAIMO — Matthew Hutchison has had a junior hockey homecoming with the Clippers.

The 19-year-old joined the club in January after the last two seasons in the WHL with Vancouver, Moose Jaw and Regina.

Back in 2021, Hutchison started his career with games with Cowichan Valley in the BCHL and the Giants in the WHL. He also spent time with the VIJHL’s Oceanside Generals, but always hoped he’d get the chance to play in Nanaimo.

“Coming in and getting to play for my hometown team for the first time is pretty cool. It’s something I’ve dreamed of all through growing up and watching the Clippers play and having billets live with me. Getting to be on a team that’s real strong and winning games, it doesn’t get much more fun than that.”

In his first five starts Hutchison has a 3-0-2 record and takes more pride in team wins than individual stats.

“My goal is to give the team a chance to win and give them confidence. When I’m enjoying what I’m doing I play my best hockey. I see how hard the players work in front of me and I want to return that favour and do my best back there.”

Hutchison brings a lot of experience to the crease and that will be a big asset for Nanaimo in the stretch drive towards the playoffs.

“In the WHL I got to play against some big time players who are in the NHL now and I played in front of crowds sometimes with ten thousand people. There’s so many special memories and one that ties back to the Clippers is playing with Will Subject in Vancouver and reuniting with him here. That’s a fun full circle moment.”

Nanaimo’s other goalie Eliot Seguin-Lescarbeau has been a big help to Hutchison in adjusting to his new team.

The pair have already become close.

“He’s a good goalie but an even better human being. He’s been great since day one giving me the rundown and filling me in on how things go. We’ve both been playing great hockey together and he’s been really good to compete with, have fun with and learn from as well. He’s been a great goalie partner and I can’t say enough good things about him.”

Currently, Hutchison’s focus is on goaltending but down the road he’s interested in officiating.

He’d like to get involved at the VIJHL level and has already made inquiries about how to do that in the near future.

Clippers highlights from games Feb. 20 versus Chilliwack and Feb. 22 in Surrey.

Hutchison and his teammates close out February with games on the Friday, Feb. 27 at home to Victoria and Saturday, Feb. 28 in Powell River.

Nanaimo has an 8-0-2 record in their last ten games with only one regulation loss since Dec. 20.

March will be a home heavy month with only two road games, both in Victoria.
