Thiebert sentenced for stabbing

A 21-year old Port Alberni man with mental health issues was sentenced to 4 years in jail for stabbing a neighbour five times – coming close to killing him.

Lucas Thiebert suffers from a litany of mental health issues and wore a spit mask in the prisoners box as he awaited his sentence yesterday.

The court heard how Thiebert harassed Leonard Ostergaard who lived across the hall from his 4th Avenue apartment, and goaded him into a fight.

Thiebert then stabbed the smaller Ostergaard in the shoulder, neck, chest, and abdomen, causing him to have emergency surgery in Nanaimo for a lacerated liver, and needing more than 100 staples to close his stab wounds.

A “considerable high-risk to reoffend”, Thiebert has been in jail since his arrest in December 2024, and will remain in jail for another 2 years before he’ll be released on probation for a further 3 years.
