Clippers trio returns from all-star weekend, road trip continues

NANAIMO — While a majority of the Nanaimo Clippers roster enjoyed a 12-day break after defeating Powell River 7-2 on Jan. 9., three players represented the organization at the BCHL’s All-Star festivities in Alberta.

Hayden Fechner played in the BCHL All-Star game and College Prospects game in Spruce Grove, while Landon Pappas and Charles Beland participated in the Prospects Game.

Fechner said it was special putting on a Canadian jersey for the Canada versus the World format.

Fechner had a productive game, scoring a goal and adding an assist, while also capturing Energy Player of the Game honours.

“Spruce Grove treated all of us very well. It was pretty cool to meet and play with a bunch of other guys from other teams. The best part outside of the game was probably my family watching me play. They haven’t watched me play this year so it was awesome they could make it out and watch me in a Canada jersey.”

Both Fechner and Pappas were able to have family in the stands in returns to heir home provinces.

For Pappas, it was a thrill to be on the ice with some of the top players in the BCHL and to soak in the weekend with his two teammates.

“Outside of the game I ended up getting to spend time with my family. I also got to spend time with one of my buddies and went to West Edmonton Mall during the day before the Team World game. It was also awesome getting to watch a teammate like Fechner score and get an award. Overall the weekend was an awesome experience and I had a great time playing with Fechner and Beland.”

Beland’s Prospects Game was cut short after taking a high stick.

Despite the unexpected setback, Beland said he enjoyed himself.

“It was great, it was very well organized and very professional. It was also really good getting to know the guys from the other teams.”

The Clippers regular season schedule resumed with a 5-4 overtime loss to the host Chilliwack Chiefs on Jan. 21.

Nanaimo has a pair of games on Friday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 24 on the road in Langley and Coquitlam respectively.

The Clippers return to Frank Crane Arena on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31 for 7 p.m. games against Alberni Valley and Coquitlam.
