CHILLIWACK — The Clippers had to dig out of a 3-0 hole, but did to get a single point in a 5-4 overtime loss against the Chiefs.

Some difficult bounces put new goaltender Matthew Hutchison and the Clippers behind the eight ball in the opening period with tallies 30 seconds apart by Chilliwack’s Nico Grabas and Jack Plandowski.

Boris Borin upped the lead to 3-0 in the middle frame late in a Nanaimo penalty.

That served as a wake up call as Hayden Fechner and Charles Beland on the man advantage narrowed the gap to 3-2 by the half point of the period.

In the third Jack Rimmer and Caden Okovita with his first ever Clipper goal on a power game Nanaimo as short lived lead.

Milan Mrsic scooped in his own rebound to tied the game 4-4 and force overtime.

In the extra session Nanaimo was shorthanded and Reese Shaw drilled home a cross ice pass to give the Chiefs the win.

Will Subject wore the ‘C’ as Clippers captain after the departure of Nathan Larioza in early January but didn’t finish the game after getting called for an illegal check to the head major plus a game misconduct.

The final shots were 30-29 for Chilliwack with Nanaimo going 2/5 on the man advantage and 2/4 killing penalties.

The Clippers are now 0-1-1 against the Chiefs this year but Nanaimo has points in four straight games overall sporting a 3-0-1 record.

Nanaimo will continue on the road with games in Langley on Jan. 23 and Coquitlam on Jan. 24.
