Wind storm cuts power for nearly 3,900 properties through Nanaimo

NANAIMO — Forecasted gusty winds have come as advertised and are causing some minor headaches.

A pair of outages for an estimated 3,874 BC Hydro customers, likely related to a Pacific frontal system moving through with heavy rain and strong wind, affected residents in central and north Nanaimo on Thursday, Nov. 6.

One outage occurred just before 2 p.m. and impacted residents and businesses in the Wellington, Brannen Lake neighbourhoods, totally 2,565 BC Hydro customers.

A second storm-linked outage happened around 3:20 p.m. in north Nanaimo, affecting the commercial centre around Aulds Rd., including Woodgrove Centre, with over 1,200 customers affected.

Hydro crews were already working in the area when the outages occurred, conducting planned work on equipment along Doumont Rd.

With some traffic signals out as a result of the power loss, motorists are reminded to follow four-way stop procedures.

Conditions are expected to ease Thursday night, with wind gusts dropping from around 80 kilometres per hour to 40 near midnight.

Friday’s forecast calls for a mix of sun and cloud before a return of the rain on Sunday, Nov. 9.

BC Ferries operations in and out of Nanaimo remain unaffected as of publishing time, with the only cancellations occurring between Swartz Bay in Victoria and Tsawwassen terminal.
