First Canadian shipment of Isuzu trucks lands in Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A popular brand of light commercial trucks from Japan have travelled directly to Canada for the first time.

The Port of Nanaimo received a shipment of Isuzu vehicles on Wednesday, Nov. 5, marking the first time ever the brand had made a shipment directly to Canada.

Trucks rolled off the vehicle transport ship Hermes Leader into the B.C. Vehicle Processing Centre (BCVPC) where they will be inspected and modified, if needed.

“It’s an exciting development and with global trade evolving, having a robust, diversified port network is vital,” Ian Marr, Port of Nanaimo president and CEO. “Nanaimo holds a strong position as an integral part of the Pacific Northwest’s transportation and logistics network, with access to Asia.”

Previously the trucks, which are popular for their capacity and reliability, were shipped to the United States and driven up to Canada.

After they complete work at the BCVPC, they’ll be loaded onto trucks and distributed to dealerships across western Canada.

Ryan McGillis, general manager of the BCVPC, said they expect this to be the first of many Isuzu deliveries into Nanaimo.

“This new trade route marks a meaningful step in bringing Canadian-bound product directly to Canadian shores, streamlining Isuzu Commercial Truck of Canada’s logistics corridor and supporting their continued growth in this market.”

Isuzu is a Japanese car manufacturing company, founded just prior to the Second World War, and primarily builds light to heavy duty commercial trucks.
