‘Nanaimo got worse much quicker:’ evolving downtown overdose prevention site aiming to better support clients
NANAIMO — Despite mounting neighbourhood challenges, an expanded facility helping those with substance use challenges is having an effect.
Senior-level staff from Island Health made their case to Councillors on Friday, Oct. 31, for continued City support to the Overdose Prevention Site (OPS) and the presently under construction Nanaimo Wellness & Recovery Centre located within the same building at 250 Albert St.
Incoming medical health officer for the Nanaimo and Oceanside region Dr. Tribesty Nguyen said Nanaimo has been hit harder by the drug toxicity crisis compared to most other areas on the Island, with a higher rate of deaths per 100,000 people.
“The rate in Nanaimo in the most recent years is about two times that of Island Health, it’s about two times that of B.C. If we start looking at 2020…post pandemic…the rate of change of things getting worse was much higher in Nanaimo, so Nanaimo got worse much quicker than the rest of the Island.”
