IMAX & recliner seating announced for Nanaimo’s Avalon theatre

NANAIMO — Significant screen, sound and comfort additions are on the way to a Nanaimo movie theatre.

Landmark Cinemas, which operates an Avalon theatre at Woodgrove Centre, outlined in an Oct. 10 news release that multiple investments are being made in phases over the next several months.

“The initial phase, starting today, will see the introduction of IMAX with Laser which delivers crystal-clear lifelike images and precision audio for a movie-going experience unlike anything else, complemented by the ultimate luxury of fully-powered recliner seating,” the release stated.

IMAX with Laser projection will be available in select productions as of mid-November.

IMAX had not been available commercially on Vancouver Island outside of Victoria.

The new recliner seating in a full stadium configuration is anticipated to be installed at Avalon theatre by the middle of next year.

In a statement to NanaimoNewsNOW, Landmark Cinemas stated one screen is being upgraded to IMAX, while another is being enhanced with Laser Ultra technology.

Projection and sound enhancements are being made to all of Landmark Cinemas eight screens at Avalon theatre.

“All screens will be like new when completed.”

Periodic restrictions will be in effect as Avalon’s eight screen rooms are overhauled.

“Screens will be unavailable as they are being renovated, but we will have some screens open the entire time. Film product will be reduced during this time,” the Landmark Cinemas statement concluded.
