Trio of charges laid after man seen kicking & punching dog near downtown Nanaimo

NANAIMO — A man from northern B.C. with a long criminal history is facing more charges, this time related to alleged abuse of a dog.

Crown Counsel approved three charges against 36-year-old Duane Tyler Vallee after an incident near downtown Nanaimo on July 27, 2025.

Nanaimo RCMP allege Vallee was seen by a witness punch and kick a German Shepherd the suspect was walking with.

The witness then approached the man and told him to stop, with the man becoming aggressive with the witness and demanding to see their phone, thinking they’d recorded the incident.

Police noted at the time the situation deescalated after the witness said they weren’t recording, with the man and his dog walking away on Selby St.

Charges against Vallee were sworn in on Monday, Oct. 6 with his first court appearance occurring the following day.

He faces one count of causing unnecessary pain/suffering to an animal and one count of uttering threats from the day of the incident, along with one charge of wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer from his arrest just over a week later.

Police note the dog with Vallee was taken and is currently in the care of the BC SPCA.

Vallee has an extensive criminal record dating back to 2010 in the northern B.C. communities of McLeod Lake and Mackenzie, both north of Prince George.

He was found guilty on a series of charges from throughout 2010 including assault, uttering threats and several breaches of probation.

Breaches of his probation orders continued until 2018 then he was jailed for 46 days on a mischief charge, then he spent another month in jail for breaching probation from a November 2023 incident.
