WHISKEY CREEK — Police say speed and road conditions may have played roles in a serious Hwy. 4 crash over the weekend.

A B.C. RCMP news release states opposing vehicles collided on Hwy. 4 on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 1:30 p.m. near Cameron Lake, involving the driver of an eastbound Honda Civic appearing to lose control on a series of curves prior to hitting a westbound Chevrolet Impala.

“The Civic subsequently became engulfed in flames and the sole occupant died at the scene. The driver of the Impala, a 70-year-old Alberta man, was extricated and taken to hospital with serious, potentially life-threatening injuries. His ongoing condition has not been confirmed at this time,” the release outlined.

Nobody else was injured in the crash east of Cameron Lake, according to police.

The name of the deceased has not been formally released, however a family friend identified the driver in a GoFundMe page as Nick Antoine.

“While the investigation is in the early stages and all causal factors have not yet been determined, police believe speed and road conditions may have played a role in the crash,” police stated.

The collision led to a complete closure of the impacted section of Hwy. 4 for several hours, effectively cutting off the Alberni Valley and points west to the east side of Vancouver Island.

Anybody with information regarding the crash, including potentially useful dash cam video, is asked to contact Oceanside RCMP at: 1-250-248-6111.
