Clippers fail to find their game in season opening loss to Bulldogs

NANAIMO — After a perfect 3-0 preseason the Clippers struggled in their home opener, falling 5-2 to Alberni Valley.

By the five minute mark of the second period Nanaimo was down 2-0 on goals by Samuel Leonard and Kai Matthew.

That served as a wake up call for the Clippers who then tallied twice in a four minute span.

Justin Collins sniped a shot off of a faceoff win and Elliot Perreault scored on a tap in.

Later in the second, the Bulldogs jumped back in front on a breakaway from Leonard and they got a big save from netminder Ryder Shea who stymied a Jack Rimmer penalty shot that would have tied the game at three.

Jacob Terpstra notched his first of two goals with 14 seconds left in the second period to give Alberni a stranglehold in the game and then added a shorthanded marker late in the third period to cap off the scoring.

The Clippers outshot the Bulldogs 33-27 with Shea getting the victory in net over Nanaimo’s Eliot Segin-Lescarbeau.

Nanaimo ended up 0/4 on the man advantage while Alberni Valley finished 0/1.

The same two teams will battle on Sept. 20 at the Alberni Valley Multiplex at 7 p.m.
