‘One of the most incredible experiences of my life:’ Nanaimo singer wins pair of country music awards

NANAIMO — A local singer is still on cloud nine after a pair of high-profile wins over the weekend.

Cameron Whitcomb, 22, won Breakthrough Artist or Group of the Year, and the Fans’ Choice award at the 2025 Canadian Country Music Association awards on Saturday, Sept. 13, held in Kelowna.

Whitcomb said on a post online after the ceremony the experience has been surreal.

“This weekend has been one of the most incredible experiences of my life, and I’m sincerely grateful for the opportunity and kindness you’ve all offered me. What a privilege and an honour to find myself amongst some of the most talented and inspiring human beings.”

Whitcomb was also nominated in four other categories, including Single of the Year and Songwriter(s) of the Year for his track ‘Quitter’.

He paid tribute to the song, a gritty, foot-stomping anthem that croons to its listeners about the hardest part of dealing with an addiction, during his acceptance speech Saturday night for breakthrough artist.

“Thank you for keeping me sober. Thank you for saving my life,” he told the crowd. “I love you sincerely, from the bottom of my heart.”

Whitcomb was a contestant, and finished in the top 20, on ‘American Idol’ in 2022, before continuing his career with the release of singles in both 2024 and 2025.

He’s due to release his first studio album, The Hard Way, later this month.
