NANAIMO — An unusual late-August heat wave is persisting for a little white yet.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement on Monday, Aug. 25, advising of a “long duration of above seasonal temperatures” for parts of Vancouver Island’s east coast.

Forecasts call for daytime highs of 30 degrees Celsius in Nanaimo both Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 27, while Parksville is projected to top out in the high 20s.

“Temperatures will continue to remain well above seasonal into mid- week for East and Inland Vancouver Island. However, cooler temperatures overnight will give some relief from the heat,” the advisory reads. “The very warm conditions are expected to persist until Thursday when cloud cover is expected.”

The region has an outside chance of breaking a handful of long-standings records this week.

Environment Canada data shows the hottest ever Aug. 26 in Nanaimo was in 1922 when the mercury reached 30.6 degrees.

Records for Aug. 27 show a maximum observed temperature of 32.2 degrees in 1986.

Nanaimo already tied a record on Sunday, Aug. 24, reaching 33.3 degrees, the same mark which was hit in 1958.

Long term forecasts call for cloudier and cooler conditions beginning Thursday, Aug. 28 and continuing through the Labour Day long weekend.
