China Creek order downgraded to 'Alert'

Mt. Underwood fire evacuation alerts lifted

Aug 20, 2025 | 9:31 AM

Evacuation alerts have been lifted for residents of Cameron Heights, Franklin River Road and Polly’s Point.

The change comes as BC Wildfire crews take advantage of cooler weather and gain the upperhand on the Mount Underwood fire.

China Creek Campground and Marina was under an Evacuation Order, but that has now been downgraded to an Evacuation Alert.

Residents and campers can return to the campground, but must be ready to leave on short notice if the fire behaviour changes.

Karley Desrosiers, Fire Information Officer with the Incident Management Team warns people to not be alarmed if there’s an increase in smoke plumes as firefighters battle the mostly underground blaze.

“We are expecting conditions to get a little bit warmer, a little bit drier and a bit windier as well, but despite that changing weather we’re not anticipating any growth on this fire,” she said. “We are expecting however that it will be more visible, where we will see more rapid drying, and therefore more smoke emitted once we have no more rain.”

With a warming trend forecasted, Desrosier says there is a risk that hot spots could flare up making it necessary for campers to evacuate again.
