NANAIMO — Police in Nanaimo are looking for a man who witnesses say was seen hitting his own dog, and then became aggressive when confronted in the city’s Old City Quarter neighbourhood.

The incident occurred on Sunday, July 27 at 6:30 p.m. in Nanaimo’s 200 block of Selby St (near Wentworth St) where a witness said they saw the man punch and kick a German Shepherd dog while walking the animal.

When the witness told the man to stop, he started walking aggressively towards the witness while demanding to see their phone.

The suspect eventually left the scene heading south on Selby St. toward Fitzwilliam St. after the witness was able to deescalate the situation by telling him they weren’t recording the interaction.

Based on the witness’s photo, police describe the man as having tanned skin, 5’11”, 175 pounds, with dark hair in a ponytail, a moustache and a closely groomed beard.

He was wearing a white and dark baseball hat, a dark t-shirt, and knee-length light-coloured shorts, and was riding and then walking with a skateboard.

The dog is described as a German Shepherd cross, with black, tan and white colouring and a white-tipped tail.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 1-250-754-2345, number: 2025-23755.
