Repair Cafe returning to fix broken Oceanside knick-knacks

QUALICUM BEACH — Making a quick fix to a wide array of items is the goal behind a returning community event this weekend.

A Repair Cafe will again take place at St. Stephen’s United Church Hall on Village Way in Qualicum Beach on Saturday, July 26 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., where volunteers will offer their skills and expertise to fix everything from small appliances to clothing.

Organizer Sarah Chezick said they’ve held similar events twice already this year, with both extremely well attended.

“We have local volunteers skilled in fixing appliances, small electronics, lamps, tech items such as computers and phones, furniture and woodworking, and children’s toys.”

Those with broken items are asked, where possible, to bring supplies needed for the repair including batteries, a zipper or a specialize part.

Of particular focus this time, is clothing repair, according to Chezick

“We want to do a call out to people to bring in those favourite shirts, jeans or jackets to get mended. So often people come and are surprised we have sewing on hand, so we want to make sure people know in advance.”

Free coffee, tea and snacks are also offered to those attending while repairs take place.

Past events have seen overwhelming demand.

One event held last April was expected to see around 50 people bring in items, however over 120 showed up.

Organizers advise those keen to get a favourite item fixed should arrive early.
