NANAIMO — Student athletes at Vancouver Island University have been recognized for their hard work on the field, in the gym and in the classroom.

A dozen VIU Mariners were named CCAA academic All-Canadians for 2024-25. The All-Canadian designation is based on earning an honours grade point average plus a conference or playoff all-star or most valuable player award.

The VIU Mariners were on point in the classroom and in competition this past season and athletic director Danielle Hyde said the institution is thrilled for the achievement.

“We’re so proud to see the Mariners excelling and ranking among the top student-athletes in the country and demonstrating the twin benefits of athletics and academics.”

The twelve winners were the most from any single PACWEST college or university and a record for the school.

In 2001, then-Malaspina College had 10 academic All-Canadians.

For 2024-25 Tori Hauptman, Mya Creed, Olivia Guild, Kaiden Thorpe, Jade Dillabough and Michael Heppelle were the soccer recipients while Owen Dyck, Rylan Van Kooten, Aimee Skinner and Grace Brisebois were the volleyball winners.

Brisebois, who’s working towards a bachelor of kinesiology, spoke about the importance of balancing the responsibilities of being a student athlete.

“It’s helped me become more organized and efficient with my time. Through sport, I’ve learned to set goals, stay committed, and push through challenges which are skills that directly translate to the classroom. Being part of a team has also strengthened my communication and leadership abilities, which have been valuable in group projects and school leadership roles.”

In basketball Kai Leighton and Harriette Mackenzie were chosen with Mackenzie giving credit to teammates for helping her excel in the gym and in the practical nursing program.

“My involvement in college sport contributed to my success in school by surrounding me with network of friendships who support and uplift each other on and off the court.”
