‘It was extremely unusual:’ man wanted after Nanaimo homeowner threatened with gun

NANAIMO — Local Mounties are searching for a man after he reportedly pointed a handgun at a Westwood-area homeowner.

Calls to police came in around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4 after a homeowner in the 200 block of Twiggly Wiggly Rd., near Westwood Lake, was threatened with a handgun.

Cst. Sherri Wade told NanaimoNewsNOW the suspect was looking for someone they believed to be living at the home, and became agitated when the homeowner said they were in the wrong place.

“It might have been something else going on with the suspect, because the homeowner was clear that the person he was looking for wasn’t there. So, whether there is an addiction issue or a mental health issue, it was extremely unusual. The person appeared not to believe the homeowner, so that’s what caused the escalation.”

Police say the man pointed a weapon resembling a handgun at the homeowner, before walking away.

Despite a swift response, which included neighbours being told by police to stay in their homes, the man could not be located.

Police Dog Services attended the scene a short time later.

“The investigation is still open,” Wade said. “They do have a good description, because the homeowner was speaking to the suspect, so he was able to provide a good description. They will be using the resources within in the detachment to kind of narrow down who that could be.”

The man is described as a Caucasian male, and was wearing blue pants, a blue shirt and a light grey or beige hoodie at the time of the incident.

Investigators are asking anyone in the area around the time of the incident to check their home security or dash cameras for any sign of the individual.

Wade noted they may not have been doing anything out of the ordinary before or after the altercation at the home.

She also said any time a weapons call is made, police respond with considerable force, establishing a perimeter in coordination with dispatch.

“A member will assign themselves to that area so that they can block a road, or they can keep eyes on that area. Once the scene is ‘broken’ and people can leave their areas they were assigned to, officers can start knocking on doors and canvassing, asking if people have home surveillance or if anyone was out in their yard and saw anything suspicious.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345.
