Extended stretch of unobstructed summer weather arrives

NANAIMO — Following a typical spring weather pattern, what appears to be a prolonged stretch of summer-like weather has arrived.

Environment Canada meteorologist Bobby Sekhon said warmer-than-average temperatures, accompanied by sunshine, are expected for the next several days across much of the mid-Island.

“Now we’re settling into more of a blocking ridge, meaning we’re in for warm, dry weather for the foreseeable future here. The next week or two look particularly on the warm and dry side.”

This time of year, the average daytime high is 13 degrees Celsius for the mid-Island region, Sekhon noted.

However, temperatures are expected to be well beyond that, culminating with potential heat nearing 30 degrees by Sunday.

While it’s difficult to predict what kind of summer is expected for the south coast/mid-Island region, Sekhon said all signs point to a warm summer.

“According to our seasonal model, we’re looking at above normal temperatures for June, July and August, and the probability is actually looking fairly high for the central and southern Vancouver Island.”

The official start of summer is June 21.

Looking back at May’s weather, Sekhon noted temperatures were slightly higher than average, while the 51 millimetres of rain at Nanaimo Airport was a shade below the monthly average of 54 millimetres.

“A lot of that seemed to come during Victoria Day long weekend when we had that wet stretch.”
