NANAIMO —The annual Elwood Wylie meet was a large success with over 450 athletes from ages nine to 80 plus.

Nanaimo Track and Field Club (NTFC) head coach and spokesperson Wanda Urbanowicz said it was one of the best meets they’ve held.

“The weather helped and the conditions were ideal. We had track rascals events, the stands were full of cheering and we also had exhibition relays. We capped it off with a group of masters athletes from Nanaimo who broke a Canadian record in the 4×800 metre relay. We held a special event for them as they were trying to beat a Canadian record they set here last year.”

The team of Peter Sinclair, Erik Hurley, Liam Watson and Paul Klan beat their own record by posting a time of 8:49 in the men’s 45-49 year old age group.

In the U16 category Megan James was one of many NTFC athletes who achieved a personal or season best result.

James’ 800 metre performance made the entry standard fo the Legion National Track and Field Championships in August.

Urbanowicz said it was a significant result.

“She’s been training since the fall cross country season and this spring. Every time she steps on the track her times are improving. It’s great to see when athletes start to see good results after all the work they put in. Provincials is just a week away, that’s really when you want to be at your best.”

Several major meets are coming up for the club with the BC HIgh School Combined Events Championships beginning Friday, May 30 in Delta, the BC High School Track and Field Championships June 5-7 in Langley and the BC Athletics Outdoor Track and Field Championships July 4-6 in Coquitlam.

Urbaniwicz said nearly 60 athletes qualified for provincials with a substantial training regimen for the top competitors.

“Those athletes who are competing at the provincial or national level are training for nine to ten months of the year up to three days a week. Many are also participating in other sports. Those student athletes have a lot to juggle.”

In September, the Nanaimo club will host the track portion of the BC 55+ Games at the Rotary Bowl.

Various other sport events will be held around the city from Sept. 9-13.
