Impaired father fined & vehicle seized after going 210km/h on Nanaimo Parkway

NANAIMO — A 31-year-old local man was fined and and had his vehicle towed and impounded after being caught driving impaired and excessively speeding.

The incident occurred on April 14 at around 11 a.m. along the Nanaimo Parkway near the Mostar Rd. intersection when the northbound vehicle sped past an unmarked B.C. Highway Patrol vehicle.

The officer registered the vehicle’s speed at 210 kilometres per hour in the 90 kilometre per hour zone and immediately pulled the vehicle over, with the driver claiming he was going to pick up his child. A roadside breath test was administered, which the driver failed.

“This is one of those instances where there are a series of obviously bad decisions being made before you get behind the wheel,” Cpl. Michael McLaughlin told NanaimoNewsNOW. “It is a reminder for everybody to be alert and be careful on the roads, you don’t know what is going on around you.”

The man was fined $483 for excessive speeding, was issued an immediate three-month driving prohibition and had his vehicle impounded for 90 days as a result of the incident.

McLaughlin said the combination of the excessive speed and the impairment created an “enormous safety issue”.

“There will be downstream consequences with licensing and with insurance. This is not a Criminal Code investigation, the officer in charge decided that the most appropriate use was to go into the Motor Vehicle Act.”

He added no vehicle should be travelling at speeds more than double the posted speed limit.

“The more you increase your speed, the more you logarithmically increase the chance of death or serious injury, not just for you but for everybody else. At the best of times when you’re going that quickly, you can’t react to what’s going on around you, never mind if something unexpected happens. This was extremely dangerous.”
