IIO investigating Oceanside RCMP officers after woman injured during arrest

Apr 23, 2025 | 1:37 PM

PARKSVILLE — The province’s independent police oversight agency is looking into potential actions of Oceanside RCMP officers following a March 24 arrest.

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) say Mounties were dispatched to a Parksville motel on March 24, 2025 at around 8:40 p.m. after an abandoned 911 call came from a room at the business.

Police were told the room where the call came from was registered to a woman “who was the subject of a current check wellbeing request”, the IIO notes.

A report from the IIO said “an interaction” occurred between police and the woman, which led to her arrest.

Roughly two weeks later, on April 7, the IIO was notified of a potential need for investigation after RCMP became aware of injuries sustained by the woman during her arrest.

The IIO are automatically called to investigate any serious harm-related injury, or death, which may have resulted from direct police action or inaction.

Should reasonable grounds be found to suggest police contributed to the situation in a manner outside their duties, charges can be forwarded to Crown Counsel for consideration.

More details on the “interaction”, along with potential recommendation of charges, are expected at a later date.
