Nanaimo RCMP search for suspect after downtown stabbing

NANAIMO — Police are looking for a suspect after a stabbing in downtown Nanaimo Monday afternoon sent one man to hospital with serious injuries.

Mounties were called to the parking lot of the TD Bank at 9 Nicol St. behind the Port Place Shopping Centre just before 2:00 p.m. on April 14.

Reserve. Cst. Gary O’Brien said an altercation broke out between two people where one of them was stabbed, but the suspect was not located.

“We did extensive searches through the downtown and he could not be found. What we know, is that person had a full-face helmet so we don’t know what ethnicity he was. He was riding a multi-coloured bike and wearing dark clothing.”

The victim was located by emergency crews a short distance away from the parking lot and transported to hospital where he remains as of Tuesday, with serious but non–life-threatening injuries.

O’Brien said they believe it was likely a targeted incident between the two people, and they don’t believe there is a threat to the community.

“We don’t know what caused the altercation. The investigation is continuing, we’re following it up, boots on the ground lots of members led by our bike patrol. We’re talking to people downtown and hopefully, we’ll be able to identify who this person is.”
