Day-long closure of Hwy. 4 planned for debris removal

NANAIMO — The only connection between Vancouver Island’s central east and west coasts will close for roughly six hours on Thursday.

Contracted crews from the provincial ministry of transportation will be on scene along Hwy. 4 near Angel Rock between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, to address a minor rock slide.

The incident occurred a week prior and was intercepted by mitigation barriers put in place after a wildfire in 2023 destabilized the surrounding area.

“The catchment that trapped the debris needs to be repaired,” the ministry noted in a release. “This requires removing the slide material and must be completed during good weather and daylight hours.”

No further closures are planned, according to the ministry.

Travel along the corridor was substantially cut off for nearly two months between early June and late August 2023 as a result of the fire and rock slides after the fact.

A detour, adding around four hours travel time between the east coast and Port Alberni, was established through Lake Cowichan.
