Second notable earthquake hits near Vancouver Island

NANAIMO — Days after a sudden thud rattled nerves across much of the central Vancouver Island region, a second earthquake has come and gone without much attention.

Earthquakes Canada reports a magnitude 5.0 earthquake was recorded approximately 180 kilometres west of Port Alice, just after 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 24.

It appears, via feedback to Earthquakes Canada, the tremor was not felt, there were no reports of damage and none would be expected by an earthquake of this scope.

At a depth of 10 kilometres, there were no tsunami alerts or advisories issued.

The tremor comes three days after a 4.8 magnitude quake struck north of Sechelt, an event which was felt across much of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast and the Lower Mainland.

Many reported the incident as feeling like a truck hitting a building, with a sudden wave or jolt which came and went quickly.

Similarly to Monday’s event, no considerable damage was reported and no tsunami alerts were issued.

Several small aftershocks were also reported, although none were felt.

However, the main difference was the depth as a tremor felt in Nanaimo and Oceanside Friday was at a depth of just one kilometre.

Officials advise using these types of events as reasons to ensure emergency plans are in place at work and at home, as well as creating an emergency kit to be able to be self-sufficient for 72 hours in the event of a major disaster.
