NANAIMO — For the 20th time in school history, the VIU Mariners will compete against the country’s best volleyball squads for a chance at a National Championship.

The women’s volleyball team won the PACWEST Provincial Championships, hosted by VIU in Nanaimo, with the team winning the gold medal game on Saturday, Feb. 22 three sets to one over Camosun.

After Camosun won the first set 25-19, the Mariners offence began to assert themselves.

It was near-relentless from VIU through the remainder of the match, with Aimee Skinner, Megan Duffy, and Regan Ingram all contributing offensively, keeping Camosun on the back foot..

VIU won the second set 25-20, then the third by a 25-18 margin.

Control of the game continued into the ultimately decisive set as the Mariners closed out another provincial title with a 25-18 win in the fourth set.

Skinner had 21 kills, while Duffy added 10 more to lead the Mariners statistically.

Libero Jordy Exner, as well as both Duffy and Skinner were named to the tournament All-Stars roster, with Skinner being named most valuable player.

The Mariner women will represent B.C. at the CCAA National Championships in Durham, Ontario, beginning early March.

They were the clear-cut best team in the province all season long, going 19-1 in the PACWEST regular season, with their only loss coming early in the year.

An untimely loss for the Mariner men saw them playing for bronze, which they captured courtesy a 3-0 win also over Camosun on Saturday.

VIU earned the momentum early through a tight first set, 25-23, then controlled the game well to win the final two sets 25-18 and 25-22 respectively.

The Mariners went through the regular season with a 14-6 record, just behind College of the Rockies who finished in top spot.

Douglas College beat the number-one-ranked College of the Rockies 3-1 in the gold medal game.
