NANAIMO — For the second time in just over four months, the local RCMP detachment is changing its leadership ranks.

Following his promotion to the Nanaimo RCMP’s top job in October 2024, Supt. Andrew Burton announced his retirement on Thursday, Feb. 20, after a 32 year career with the Mounties.

Prior to Nanaimo, Burton served in Port Alberni, Smithers, Bella Coola, Kamloops, Merritt, Quesnel and Regina.

“It has been an honour and privilege to serve with the RCMP throughout the country. I am very proud of the work of members and staff at the Nanaimo detachment. Time and time again, they are asked to do challenging work in often very trying circumstances,” Burton said in a statement.

Burton has worked in both Indigenous policing, as well as the RCMP’s Serious Crime and Drug Enforcement units.

He also spend 12 years with the force’s Emergency Response Team.

The city’s former top cop won’t be idle in his retirement, as he is starting a new position as Warden for the Nanaimo Correctional Centre.

Nanaimo Mayor Leonard Krog paid tribute to Burton after his lengthy career on the force.

“His leadership, commitment to public safety and efforts to support both the community and his fellow officers have left a lasting impact. Supt. Burton’s contributions will be felt for years to come and we wish him all the best as he takes on a new challenge.”

Assuming the position of the Officer in Charge of the Nanaimo detachment is Supt. Eric Rochette.

Rochette has served as an RCMP member in Manitoba, Quebec and B.C., and a majority of his career to date has been in front-line policing and on patrol, according to the RCMP.

“I am honoured to have been selected as the new Officer in Charge for Nanaimo Detachment,” Rochette said. “I am committed to working closely with all our partners to ensure we maintain the highest standard of service, professionalism and integrity.”

Burton had been serving as Officer in Charge in an acting capacity for around a year before being announced as the full-time replacement for Supt. Lisa Fletcher who left the detachment in 2023.
