Clippers erase two goal deficit but lose in overtime to Grizzlies

COLWOOD — The Clippers picked up a point for the tenth straight game but dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Victoria Grizzlies.

Nanaimo opened the scoring on a rebound goal by Luke Lavery in the first period but ultimately found themselves down 3-1 by the middle of the second.

A pair of goals by Will Schumacher and another by Julian Cull staked the Grizzlies to the lead.

Justin Collins earned a fortunate bounce to bring the game to 3-2 before the second intermission.

Tanner Bruender and Jack Rimmer buzzed the Victoria net after a two on one rush and jammed home the 3-3 marker early in the final period.

Both Clipper players were digging for the puck in the crease but the goal was credited to Rimmer.

Then goalies Oliver Auyeung-Ashton and the Clippers Chazz Nixon shut the door until overtime.

Both teams had chances in the extra session but Tobias Pitka sniped a shot from the right wing half way through OT to give the Grizzlies the victory.

Nanaimo outshot Victoria 43-36 but the Clippers lost the special teams battle going 0/4 on the power play and 0/2 killing penalties.

Missing in action were team leading scorer Dylan Kinch and top scoring defenceman Garin Ludwig.

After the game Clippers assistant coach Gaelan Patterson said he was hopeful both could return to the lineup as soon as Feb. 28 when Nanaimo visits Trail.

The Clippers fell to 2-4 in the season series with Victoria with one more head to head game on Mar. 8 at the Q Centre.
