NANAIMO — Police in Nanaimo are trying to locate and identify a man allegedly seen abusing a small dog.

Mounties report just before noon on Wednesday, Feb. 12, a man was seen walking along Aulds Rd., west of the Nanaimo Parkway, with a witness saying the man was beating a small, brown dog.

“The witness saw him pick up the dog and toss it “like a football” across the road, put it into a black shopping bag, and then punch it several times,” police said in a statement.

After the witness confronted the man about what she’d seen, he allegedly became confrontational and threatened her, according to police.

Both the RCMP and Animal Control were called to the scene but neither the man or the dog were found.

Police are looking for a Caucasian man, with a thin build who was wearing a black, puffy jacket with a wide, gray fur-rimmed hood, brown boots and jeans.

The dog with him at the time is a small, brown dog resembling a Chihuahua.

RCMP note if people see the man, do not approach and call the Nanaimo detachment at 250 754 2345, referencing file number 2025-4134.

Mounties also said a person of interest identified by people on social media has been ruled out as a suspect by investigators.
