Streak over as Clippers fall in overtime heartbreaker

NANAIMO — The Clippers’ seven-game win streak ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night, in a low-offence affair.

Entertaining the Prince George Spruce Kings at Frank Crane Arena on Saturday, Feb. 15, both teams quickly settled into a defence-first game with few shots on goal.

The first period ended scoreless with shots favouring the visitors 10-7.

Into the second period and few opportunities came, despite some powerplay time and a little more free-flowing hockey.

Prince George opened the scoring late in the period when a shot from a faceoff generated a rebound in front of Clipper goaltender Chazz Nixon for Mason Loewen to bury and make it 1-0.

Nanaimo countered just over two minutes later on their third powerplay of the game, as a Cole Lonsdale centering pass deflected off a Spruce Kings defenceman and into the back of the net.

The goal was Lonsdale’s 22nd of the season and made it 1-1.

No scoring in the third period as the game continued at its slow pace, with regulation time not providing a game winner.

Shots on goal favoured Prince George 22-18.

In the extra session, the eventual game winner would come off the stick of Spruce Kings forward Owen Goodbrand, who went in all alone after Cole Lonsdale lost an edge and fell with the puck as he exited the Clippers zone.

Goodbrand was able to beat Nixon and give PG a weekend sweep on Vancouver Island and their fourth win in a row.

With the point and an Alberni win, Nanaimo sits two back of the Bulldogs, Capitals and Express who are in a share of fourth place in the Coastal Conference standings.

Just five points separate Victoria in second to Nanaimo in seventh.

The Clippers host Alberni Valley on Friday, Feb. 22, before travelling to Victoria on Saturday, Feb. 23.
