Italian speedskater Davide Ghiotto sets world record in 10,000 metres in Calgary

CALGARY — Italian speedskater Davide Ghiotto has set a world record in the men’s 10,000 metres in Calgary’s Olympic Oval.

Ghiotto crossed the line in 12 minutes, 25.69 seconds to better the previous record of 12:30.74 set by Sweden’s Nils van der Poel at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing.

Ghiotto was the bronze medallist in Beijing and has won back-to-back world championship gold in the 10k.

He also earned back-to-back silver medals in the 5,000 metres at world championships.
