NANAIMO — Last minute holiday shoppers looking for something locally made are in luck.

Island Roots Market, regularly held Wednesday’s inside the Centennial Building at Beban Park, are hosting a special pop-up Christmas market on Sunday, Dec. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Organizer Michele Greene said with Christmas and New Years falling on a Wednesday this year, they had to be closed and wanted to offer vendors and shoppers alike an event to attend.

“People who are just shopping for their usual groceries and they want to pick their turkey up that day or their pie up that day…they can do so and shop and buy gifts. We’ll have crochet and artwork and photography, jewellery and lots of goodies.”

Around 50 vendors are expected to pack the Centennial Building, a number which is almost capacity according to Greene.

She added many of their regulars are committed to attend, as well as around 20 new-to-them vendors.

A food truck will help keep people fed, while live music will serve as some additional entertainment.

Greene said the event is not only serves as a opportunity for late holiday shoppers, it’s also a rare chance to get a lot of their regular vendors and some new additions together during a wintery weekend.

“There’s a lot of people that would love a [year-round] weekend market in Nanaimo, but unfortunately with all the other weekend markets that run in the summer it’s just not viable as all our different vendors at different markets on Saturday’s and Sunday’s.”

Island Roots Market runs year round on Wednesday afternoons, inside the Centennial Building during the cooler and wetter weather, before moving outdoors in front at the same location in the summer.
