Lead detected in local school taps

Water taps in local schools are being scrutinized after traces of lead were detected in two Alberni elementaries.
Eleven taps at Maquinna Elementary must be flushed before use, or a filtration system installed, after tests showed lead levels exceeded the maximum allowable concentration of 0.005 milligrams per litre.
A tap in the boys washroom at Tsumaas Elementary also tested above the limit, as did Wickaninish Elementary in Tofino and both Ucluelet schools.
According to Pacific Rim School District officials, a daily morning flushing programs is enough to reduce contaminants to an acceptable level in some taps, while in-line filtration systems are being installed in others.
Signs have been placed at all affected tap locations and at taps that haven’t yet been tested.
Exposure to lead in drinking water can have effects on neurological development and behaviour, such as a lower IQ in children, and increased blood pressure or kidney problems in adults.
