NANAIMO — A former mayor and prominent community leader in the Harbour City will be presented with the city’s highest civilian award to mark his years of community dedication.

John Ruttan, who served two terms as Nanaimo’s mayor from 2008 to 2014, has been awarded the distinguished Freedom of the City honour.

According to a City news release, Ruttan has spent over 60 years dedicating himself to community service, including presiding over numerous local boards and committees including 53 years working with the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society, including serving as the Commodore/Chair from 1984 to 1991.

Ruttan also served six years as chair of the Nanaimo Port Authority, was involved with Tourism Nanaimo for eight terms, including four as president, and has been part of numerous other local organizations, including various Rotary clubs, advisory boards, and the Nanaimo Hospitality Association.

“John Ruttan’s remarkable dedication to Nanaimo over the past six decades has profoundly impacted out city,” said Nanaimo mayor Leonard Krog. “His legacy is evident in the many community projects and initiatives he has supported and he is a true example of the spirit of service. It is a great privilege to recognize his contributions with Freedom of the City.”

Ruttan presided over Nanaimo during a period of significant growth, including expansion of the Nanaimo Airport while he was chairman of the Support YCD committee, according to the City.

Ruttan was named “Citizen of the Year” in 2008 by the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce.

A unanimous vote by City Council is required to grant Freedom of the City, which will be presented during a special ceremony at a yet-to-be-determined future regular Nanaimo council meeting.

Recipients are entitled to free parking in city-operated parkades and where there are on-street parking meters, and their photo will be hung in the Freedom of the City portrait gallery inside the Vancouver Island Conference Centre.

Previous winners include former longtime City councillor and social advocate Diane Brennan, honoured in 2021.
