VIU Mariners women’s soccer in contention for bronze medal at CCAA nationals

SQUAMISH — After a narrow defeat in their first game at the CCAA women’s soccer nationals the VIU Mariners kept in medal contention with a massive win.

The Mariners scored four goals in the opening 22 minutes of their bronze medal quarterfinal en route to an 8-0 win over the Brandon University Bobcats on Thursday, Nov. 7.

VIU coach Bobbie Taylor liked the way the team rebounded from a tournament opening 1-0 loss against Montmorency the day prior.

“We entered the game with an assertive mentality and took what we learned from yesterday and made positive strides today. Rewarding ourselves with goals has been a challenge all season so this is certainly refreshing and timely.”

The Thursday result was a major turnaround for the Mariners setting up a bronze medal semifinal against the Concordia Thunder on Friday, Nov. 8 at 3 p.m.

“That first game that was in our control to take but we lacked composure in the final third. We’ve played a lot of quality soccer and that’s what we need to hang on to mentally going in to the next game.”

Montreal-based Concordia has been involved in a pair of tight games in their nationals run, winning 1-0 in penalties over MSVU and losing 1-0 to Ahuntsic.

The winner on Thursday’s semi-final matchup plays for bronze on Saturday.

“We’ll continue with loads of confidence,” Taylor said. “We carry momentum to keep the vision of finishing the tournament with a medal.”
